SunTrust now offers cards with EMV chip technology. The embedded chip provides you with greater international acceptance and extra levels of security against card fraud.
Chip cards are already in wide use around the world and have proven to help reduce fraud by making it more difficult to duplicate the card or make purchases without authorization.
Over the next several years, U.S. merchants will be upgrading their terminals to include acceptance of chip cards. In the meantime, SunTrust cards with chip technology will feature both a chip and a magnetic stripe. So, even if a merchant hasn't yet switched their terminals to chip technology, you will still be able to use your card by swiping and signing as usual.

Chip technology is already in wide use around the world and has proven to help reduce fraud by making it more difficult to duplicate the card or make purchases without authorization. When you use your card with chip technology, you may be prompted to enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN) for card purchases. This PIN verification process will help protect your identify and ensure that you are in fact the authorized user of the card.
Cards with chip technology are already widely used in other countries. Many of the merchants around the world have already converted and/or upgraded their card reading equipment (terminals) to accept cards with chip technology. As a result, cards with chip technology issued in the U.S., should be widely accepted when traveling internationally.
Over the next several years, U.S. merchants will upgrade their terminals to include acceptance of cards with chip technology. New cards that contain both a magnetic stripe AND the embedded chip will be issued to most card clients over the next few years. At merchant terminals that have upgraded to the new technology, instead of swiping your card, you will be required to insert your card. Unlike today, you may be prompted to enter your PIN for your purchases. Even if the merchant has not yet switched to the new technology, you can still use your SunTrust card with chip technology as usual by swiping and signing for your purchases.
