What kind of account activity is considered a transaction?

When you think about making transactions, your everyday purchases and electronic debits like online bill payments probably come to mind. Transactions actually encompass a lot more than that. Money transfers and wires? Those are types of transactions. Mobile deposits, ATM deposits and branch deposits? Those are transaction types, too. Anytime money comes in or out of your account, that’s a transaction.

Making Various Kinds of Deposits

These days, there are multiple deposit options. In addition to traditional deposits made at a branch with a teller, you can now make deposits from SunTrust ATMs or even your mobile device. You can also set up Direct Deposit and have funds automatically deposited directly to the account(s) you choose.

Deposit cut-off times vary by banking method, as disclosed in our Funds Availability Policy. In the branch, the cut-off time will be posted. ATM and Mobile deposits can be made until 9 p.m. ET. See All Deposit Cut-off Times

Learn How to Take Advantage of Three Convenient Deposit Solutions:

Cash and Check Deposits at SunTrust ATMs

  • Use your SunTrust debit card and PIN as usual, then follow the on-screen instructions to make a deposit.
  • When prompted, insert your cash or signed check(s) into the ATM.
  • Check deposits made prior to cut off on a business day (Monday through Friday, except holidays) will generally be available the next day1. Deposits may be subject to a hold, which delays when those funds will be available to you. Learn more about deposit cut-off times and holds.
  • We recommend that you leverage Online and Mobile banking to monitor your account. You can also sign up for email and text alerts in Online Banking to help manage your account activity.

Deposit checks with the SunTrust Mobile or Tablet App

  • Sign on, then select "Deposit a Check" and "Make a Deposit" in the Main Menu
  • Enter the "To" account and the deposit amount
  • Endorse the check and take a picture of the front and back of the check
  • Then tap "Submit Deposit"

Sign up for Direct Deposit

Complete the payroll or government Direct Deposit form—whichever applies to you. Then, give that form to your employer or government agency along with a blank check that corresponds with the account you want the funds deposited to.

Transfer your direct deposits from other banks

Use our SwitchAgentTM service. You provide information related to your existing pre-authorized incomes and withdrawals such as insurance, mortgage payments or automatic deposits. We'll take care of the rest.

Using Digital Bill Pay Solutions

When you use Online Banking or Mobile Banking to pay your bills, those transactions are called electronic/ACH transactions. There are a lot of similarities between the two, and both offer a convenient alternative to paying bills by check.

Here's How They Work:

Pay bills from one secure site with one password. Even set up recurring payments on the day of your choosing and be sure your bills are always paid on time.

  • To begin, sign on to Online Banking
  • Select "Move Money," then "Pay Bills"
  • Choose the bill(s) you want to pay
  • Enter the dollar amount and date the payment should be delivered by
  • Select "Make Payments"

Enjoy options with participating billers to pay your bills even faster with Same Day Bill Pay or Overnight Check services.2


Pay bills anytime, anywhere and enjoy the same security measures as our Online Banking.

  • Sign on to the SunTrust Mobile or Tablet App
  • From the Main Menu, tap "Bill Pay", then "Make a Payment"
  • Choose who gets paid, from which account, how much, and when
  • Then tap "Submit Payment"

View your scheduled and processed payments from the Bill Pay menu.

Completing Different Kinds of Money Transfers

You can handle internal and external money transfers all on your own via SunTrust Online Banking.

Here’s how:

Pay and Transfer in Online Banking allows you to transfer money quickly and securely between eligible SunTrust accounts or pay your SunTrust bills. You can also easily review scheduled and completed transfers. And, if you need to transfer money on the go, simply use SunTrust Mobile Banking on your mobile device3 or visit one of our ATMs.

Transfers must be made by 11:59 p.m. ET through the ATM, Online Banking, our Mobile and Tablet apps, and 800.SUNTRUST for same-day availability.

From the "Move Money" tab in Online Banking, you can easily transfer funds between your SunTrust accounts and your accounts at another U.S. bank or financial institution.

Simply add and verify eligible external accounts, then enter the transfer details (fee may apply4). Qualified External Transfer users may choose the premium Next Day Transfer option too (fee may apply5). 

Send and receive or request money from other people regardless of where they bank within U.S.using Zelle. With the other person's email address or U.S. mobile phone number, the transfer will be complete typically in minutes.

Handling Money Wires

When you need to transfer funds quickly, whether domestically or internationally, SunTrust Wire Transfer service is the ideal choice.

Here’s how it works:

SunTrust clients can send a one-time payment or can be easily setup for recurring wire transfers in-person at a branch. Whether you are initiating a domestic or international wire, we can process your instruction and release funds within minutes of receiving your approval and verifying your account.

The fees associated with wire transfers vary by certain transaction criteria—e.g., incoming or outgoing, international or domestic. Please refer to our fee schedule for applicable fees.

For the most part, the information you'll need to complete a domestic or wire transfer is the same. Depending on the amount of the transfer though, additional information may be required for international wires.

In general, here's what you'll need:

  • Debit account number
  • Social Security number or other identifiable information
  • Amount of the wire transfer
  • Beneficiary/recipient name and address
  • Beneficiary/recipient account number
  • Name and ABA number or bank identifier code of the beneficiary/recipient bank

If the funds are sent during normal business hours and the beneficiary/recipient bank is domestic, the beneficiary/recipient usually receives credit of funds on the same business day the wire transfer is initiated.

If the beneficiary/recipient bank is international, the beneficiary/recipient receives the funds within three to five business days.
