Director of Governance

Natalie Smailes joined GenSpring in 2018 and is the director of governance and senior vice president. In this role, Natalie is the lead coordinator of the RESERVE offering. She works closely with the GenSpring education team to manage the delivery of the self-paced Next Gen Education material for RESERVE clients through the client and wealth advisors and the RESERVE specialist team. Natalie also works across the firm to coordinate the delivery of family meetings and the education modules, working with the regional trust advisors (RTA) and the governance and education teams to manage the effort. Natalie also coaches and mentors the RTAs as they plan and deliver the RESERVE offering.

In addition to her RESERVE responsibilities, Natalie will deliver the full breadth of Governance to new GenSpring clients. Natalie will deliver GenSpring’s proprietary tools and processes specifically designed to help families increase their chances of sustaining wealth over generations. Natalie will work alongside GenSpring’s wealth advisors as they help clients identify wealth objectives and develop appropriate methods for governing their shared assets.

Prior to joining the GenSpring team, Natalie worked as a client advisor and financial consultant for SunTrust Private Wealth Management for three years. In addition, Natalie has spent 27 years in Wealth Management with First Citizens Bank and First Union Bank. Her roles involved working with high net worth families, addressing their needs for financial planning, insurance, investment management and banking.

Natalie served as the Secretary and President of the North Carolina Community Foundation for Wake County for 10 years. In her tenure, she worked to develop the Board as well as to develop a greater presence for the foundation within the community by increasing Board Membership three-fold, and establishing an annual fundraising event.

Natalie is a graduate in Economics from Furman University and held Series 7, 63, licenses during her tenure at all three firms. She is mother to Jake and Josh and a native Ohioan.
