Overdraft/Returned Item Fees
Overdraft and returned item fees are assessed when you try to use more money than there is available in your account.
These fees are assessed based on your available balance.
An overdraft fee is a $36 fee that is incurred when you make a purchase that totals more than the available balance in your account and the transaction is paid with negative funds. Until a deposit is made to cover the transaction amount, your available balance will be negative. SunTrust will automatically waive overdraft/returned item fees on transactions that are less than $5 (e.g., you're buying a coffee). If your account becomes overdrawn during a business day, you can avoid this fee by making a deposit or transferring funds from another SunTrust account to cover the overdraft by the daily deposit cut-off time. If you deposit a check, this assumes that we do not place a hold on the check.
Note: Overdraft fees may be assessed on checks, recurring debit card transactions and ACH items. Also, if you have accepted Overdraft Coverage, ATM and one-time debit card transactions may be assessed an overdraft fee.
An extended overdraft fee is a $36 fee that is incurred when your current (ledger) balance has been negative for five consecutive business days (excludes Saturdays, Sundays and holidays). To avoid this fee, you must make a deposit to bring your current balance positive by the daily cut-off time on the fifth consecutive business day (learn more about the daily deposit cut-off times here ).
Avoid extended overdraft fees by following this chart:
If you overdraw your account on…
|You must make a deposit to cover the overdraft by the daily cut-off time on...||Or you will be charged the extended overdraft fee on...|
To help you avoid an extended overdraft fee, we will mail you a written notification when you overdraw your account or an item is returned. When you are at risk of incurring an extended overdraft fee, an alert will be displayed in Online and Mobile Banking providing the date you must make a deposit or transfer by to bring your balance positive and avoid the fee. Additionally, Online Banking clients will receive an email notification to their email address on file. There is no need to opt-in to receive this alert, it is automatic; however, please make sure your email address in Online Banking is up-to-date so you can receive important notifications about your account.
A returned item fee is a $36 fee that is incurred when you try to make a purchase that costs more than the available balance in your account and the transaction is returned unpaid. Say you want to write a check to purchase a new doggie bed for $35 but only have $25 in your checking account. The transaction would not go through and you would have to pay the fee. SunTrust will automatically waive overdraft/returned item fees on transactions that are less than $5.
In some cases, as an added benefit of having a checking account with us, we automatically waive overdraft and returned item fees on your behalf when your balance isn’t sufficient to cover transactions. For instance, if a transaction that overdraws your account is less than $5, we waive the overdraft fee. Also, SunTrust limits total Overdraft and Returned Item fees to 6 per day. When we waive a fee, we’ll show you in Online and Mobile Banking as an overdraft item fee not charged or a returned item fee not charged.
If you incur an overdraft or returned item fee, or if we waive one automatically on your behalf, we’ll make it easy to see in Online Banking and Mobile Banking, along with the transaction that caused it. Here’s an example from Online Banking:
An overdraft protection transfer fee is incurred on the day Overdraft Protection is used. As long as the linked account balance can cover the transaction amount, you will pay just one transfer fee on the day the overdrafts occur — regardless of how many transactions.
Help minimize fees with Overdraft Protection and Overdraft Coverage. You can also set up text and email alerts within Online Banking to help you keep track of your available balance and notify you if your account becomes overdrawn.
An overdraft fee will not be assessed if the transaction that caused the overdraft is an everyday (non-recurring) debit card transaction or an ATM transaction provided you had declined overdraft coverage at the time the transaction was authorized. However, if your balance remains negative for 5 consecutive business days, you may be charged an extended overdraft fee.
This is a $2.50 processing fee charged when you use an ATM outside of SunTrust´s network of over 2,000 ATMs. Be cautious because the owners of those ATMs not in our network may charge their own fees, which could raise the total cost of using that machine. The easiest way to never pay an ATM fee is to use SunTrust ATMs. But if you find yourself using different ATMs frequently, you should look into our Signature AdvantageSM checking account , which offers unlimited use of all ATMs.
