Check 21 Legislation
The Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act, known as Check 21, is a federal law that went into effect on October 28, 2004. Under this new legislation, banks and other financial institutions, including SunTrust, have the option of creating, processing, and exchanging digital pictures of checks rather than moving the original paper. Check 21 makes this digital copy of your paper check a legal "substitute check."

The goals of Check 21 are to streamline check processing, reduce paper, combat fraud and to improve the overall efficiency and security of the nation's payment system. To help you better understand this initiative, the following documents explain how Check 21 may impact you.
