How is the Portfolio Management Analyst Program structured?

SunTrust's Portfolio Management Analyst Program is designed to prepare recent college graduates to be specialists in the preservation of SunTrust’s capital commitments to its clients. Analysts begin with six weeks of classroom instruction that includes accounting, modeling, corporate finance, and financial analysis training as well as an introduction to SunTrust Robinson Humphrey’s various capital markets products. During this training program, Analysts will interact with colleagues across all levels of the bank. The network established during this period will be a valuable resource throughout your career. Upon completion of the training program, Analysts are placed in one of our industry groups:

What is the role of a Portfolio Management Analyst?

Portfolio Management Analysts are principally responsible for carrying out the credit analysis process for STRH clients. The underwriting process entails conducting a thorough analysis of the credit quality of both the client and the respective industry to ensure appropriate risk and return for SunTrust’s capital investment. The analysis is conducted using publicly available information as well as private information derived from due diligence calls with the client’s management team. After committing to a transaction, the Portfolio Management Analysts, in conjunction with the Portfolio Managers, follow clients’ performance, analyze industry performance and assist in managing the commercial loan risk profile.

Analysts support a team comprised of senior Portfolio Managers as well as Client Managers who serve as the primary point of customer contact. The Client Management team is responsible for originating and developing long-term relationships with clients within each specialty group focus area.

As an Analyst, you will have exposure to a wide variety of lending transactions, allowing you to develop an in-depth knowledge of corporate markets and to build expertise in corporate finance and credit underwriting. Analysts are responsible for carrying out the credit underwriting process for periodic reviews as well as new transactions, which entails conducting a thorough analysis of the credit quality of both the client and the respective industry to ensure appropriate risk and return for SunTrust’s capital investment. The analysis is conducted using publicly available information as well as private information derived from due diligence calls with the borrower’s management team. In both periodic reviews and transactions, analysts work with senior Portfolio Managers to seek approval from Risk Managers and assist in the execution of transactions for clients.

Analysts also work closely with Portfolio Managers and Client Managers to identify new business opportunities across all product areas, including Capital Markets and Treasury, prepare marketing materials for client presentations, and partner with Product Specialists to execute identified opportunities. Overall, the Portfolio Management Analyst develops a strong fundamental knowledge of financial analysis, corporate banking, and a variety of capital market products and transactions.

What do you need to get started?

  • BA/BS required; any major; Business major preferred
  • Overall minimum GPA of 3.0 required
  • Accounting or Finance coursework preferred
  • Proven analytical ability and attention to detail
  • Solid leadership and interpersonal skills
  • High degree of academic and extracurricular achievement
