Identity Theft
Identity theft is a serious crime where people try to illegally use your personal information for their own gain. Information such as your name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, online banking passwords or other PINs, and credit and check card numbers are keys to your financial information. When scammers obtain your confidential information, they can charge expenses to your accounts, create new accounts in your name, or use your personal information for other illegal purposes.

If someone steals your identity, our staff will work with you to resolve any issues affecting your SunTrust accounts. In addition, SunTrust has partnered with the Identity Theft Assistance Center (ITAC) to ensure you have a resource to obtain assistance with accounts opened fraudulently in your name at other institutions or entities. We will refer you to ITAC at no cost to you.

What is ITAC?

ITAC The Identity Theft Assistance Center is a not-for-profit cooperative initiative which provides victim assistance services for customers. ITAC has helped thousands of victims recover from identity theft.

What to expect:
  • A SunTrust fraud specialist will assist you with any accounts opened in your name at SunTrust and assist you in the preparation of a uniform affidavit.
  • The SunTrust fraud specialist will explain the ITAC services to you and obtain your consent to refer you to ITAC. Since ITAC is a third party, SunTrust is not responsible for any services provided by ITAC and your use of services by ITAC is voluntary on your part.
  • ITAC will assist you in reviewing your credit report to identify any suspicious activity that may be present, may assist you in notification to the other creditors, and may also help you place a fraud alert on your credit report.
  • ITAC shares information with the Federal Trade Commission and law enforcement.
