Online Privacy Practices

SunTrust has a long-standing commitment to protecting the confidentiality of our clients' personal financial information. You can read about that commitment in detail in the Privacy section of this site. However, because of the unique nature of the Internet, we believe is helpful to have an overview of how this commitment is applied when SunTrust collects, uses, and protects your personal information when you visit us online.

The Types of Information We Collect and How It is Used

When you visit a SunTrust Web site, we may collect navigational information, such as pages visited and average time spent on a particular page. This is done to help us analyze our site design and enhance your experience. We may also collect technical information concerning your computer browser type, IP address, or the presence of any software necessary to view our site, such as Macromedia® Flash®. This information may be used to alert you of any possible software compatibility issues. (Macromedia and Flash are registered trademarks of Macromedia, Inc. in the United States and/or other countries.) Further, to protect the security of your personal and account information, we may collect information about the computer you use to access secure Web pages.

We also collect personal information provided by you or your representative on applications, forms, and emails. We use this information for many purposes, including processing transactions on your account, responding to product applications and questions, and to fulfill regulatory requirements. The information we collect is used to deliver the services you have requested. SunTrust maintains strict policies to protect against the unauthorized disclosure or use of client information and has extensive safeguards in place to prevent unauthorized access. (See "Who has access to this information?" in the SunTrust Privacy Policy).

SunTrust Banks, Inc. and its ad management partners may also use pixels, or transparent gif files, to help manage online advertising. These pixels (also known as action tags or spotlights) allow us and our ad management partners to recognize a unique cookie on your Web browser, which in turn enables us to learn which advertisements bring users to our Web site. The cookie was placed by us or by our ad management partner.

Beacons are another file format that SunTrust may use to track activity. Beacons remain on our site and are not stored on your computer.

With cookies, beacons, gif files and other technologies, the information that we collect and share is anonymous and not personally identifiable. It does not contain your name, address, telephone number, or email address. We use this information to understand, for example, the effectiveness of our advertising and marketing and to develop content and offers to better serve our clients.

For more information about our ad management partner, DoubleClick, including information about how to opt out of these tracking technologies, visit their company Web site:

You can also opt out by following the directions to disable cookies listed below. However, we recommend against making such a selection, since disabling cookies on our Web sites may hinder our ability to securely protect your account from unauthorized users and impact your ability to use some of their basic features.

As an additional layer of security and to help prevent unauthorized access to your accounts, we use cookies and similar files to help verify your identity and to watch for any unusual or suspicious behavior. These encrypted cookies and similar files are designed to protect you - even if a criminal has your user ID and password. The information encrypted in these cookies is only specific to SunTrust and we do not collect information about other Web sites you visit. In addition to encrypted cookies, we use files called Flash Objects to help protect your personal and account information online. Neither the Flash Objects, encrypted cookies nor similar files contain personally-identifiable information.

Here is more detailed information about your online relationship with SunTrust that you may find useful.

One of the most important priorities in providing you with Online Banking services is the security of your personal financial information. When you send personal information to us over the Internet, our security standards guard it in several ways.

We use an extra layer of security when you bank online with encrypted cookies, Flash Objects and similar files. These tools help us ensure your identity and will help protect your accounts from unauthorized use - even if criminals have your user ID and password.

We also use secure transmissions to encrypt information which helps protect it from interception by a third party. The use of firewalls, passcodes, and other safety features we've installed also help ensure that the information you provide us remains safe and secure.

More information on how we protect your information online and measures you can take to protect yourself can be found in the Security section of the site.
