My name is Tracey Devine, and I'm director of manager research for SunTrust's Investment Advisory Group. My primary responsibility at SunTrust is to source money managers and to ensure that they're meeting our expectations. Manager due diligence is about much more than a snapshot of historical performance. For example, it's important to review rolling returns and analyze how managers perform versus our expectations in a variety of market environments.
The amount of risk a manager takes to achieve performance is critical in our analysis. Not only do we analyze all the supporting details surrounding the familiar five Ps—People, Philosophy, Process, Performance and Price—but we also spend a significant amount of time and resources on operational due diligence and on-site visits where we have access to the lead portfolio managers and analysts.
